Weddings Offered in the Davenport House Museum Garden on Valentine’s Day!

A beautiful courtyard garden offers a Setting for Weddings on Valentine’s Day with Judge Gnann Officiating!

On Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, 2009, Judge Hamrick “Rick” Gnann, Jr., of the Municipal Court of Pooler, will perform wedding ceremonies in the Davenport House Museum Garden. This special event begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m., with ceremonies every 10 minutes. Judge Gnann is donating his time and services in this unique and joyful way to the Davenport House for a suggested donation of $100 to the museum. Couples who bring a valid marriage license, which does not require a waiting period or a blood test in the state of Georgia, may call (912) 236-8097 to reserve their ceremony time. In the event of rain, ceremonies will be performed on the back porch of the museum, overlooking the Garden.

“For Valentine’s Day we are pleased to offer our garden to couples who do not want an elaborate ceremony but want a memorable setting,” offers Jamie Credle, director, Davenport House. In addition, Judge Rick Gnann feels that offering these garden weddings to couples who wish to marry in our historic city on Valentine’s Day will be a joyful way to honor the Davenports and benefit the museum.

In the early 19th century the Davenport House was the home of a devoted family headed by Sarah and Isaiah Davenport. A copy of their wedding certificate is on exhibit in the museum. Also, Savannahians of the time were familiar with the celebration of Valentine’s Day as indicated by a watercolor of an entwined heart in daughter Cornelia’s scrapbook dated 1839.

Located on Columbia Square at 324 East State Street in Savannah, the Isaiah Davenport House Museum is open for tours daily – Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m.
